Geoffrey Haydon & James Lyke
The NVRS Sunday, Sept. 19, 1999 concert by the Haydon-Lyke Piano Duo
featured works by Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, Jerome Kern, George Gershwin,
Richard Rodgers, and Vincent Youmans as well as ragtime and novelty arrangements
for two pianos. Some of the arrangements are by Haydon-Lyke (available from
Warner Bros. Publications) and others are by such notable arrangers as
Whittemore and Lowe, Cy Walters, and Jacques Fray.
Geoffrey Haydon
A native of Manassas, VA. Geoffrey Haydon received his Bachelor of Music degree
from the University of Richmond and studied three summers at the Aspen Music
Festival. He received his Master of Music and Doctorate of Musical Arts degrees
from the University of Texas at Austin. Currently, Dr. Haydon coordinates the
piano faculty at Georgia State University in Atlanta where he teaches piano, piano
literature, jazz history, and jazz theory. He is both a professional classical and jazz
performer and is a member of the Haydon-Lyke Piano Duo, the American Music Trio,
and the Georgia State Faculty Jazztet. Dr. Haydon has performed throughout the
United States, in South America, Central America, and Europe. In addition, Dr. Haydon
is in demand as a clinician and adjudicator. He has numerous piano publications and
arrangements with Warner Bros. Music and Stipes Publishing Company. In 1977, "Cabin
Fever", a jazz CD by the McLean-Haydon Jazz Quartet, was released on the ACA Digital label.
Dr. Haydon is also an active member of the International Association of Jazz Educators.
James Lyke
James Lyke served on the faculty of the University of Illinois for 33 years. In 1993, he
accepted a professorship as coordinator of the Piano Pedagogy and Graduate Studies
programs at Georgia State University in Atlanta. He holds degrees from State University
of New York, College at Fredonia, Columbia University, and the University of
Northern Colorado. Dr. Lyke has also been a guest professor at the University of
Michigan and Adelaide College of Music in South Australia. He has conducted
workshops for piano teachers throughout the United States and in Austria, Switzerland,
France, Australia, South Korea, and Cyprus. Dr. Lyke's major publications include
three texts for adult piano instruction and a text on piano teaching. Warner Bros. Music
has published his duet and duo piano arrangements of Americal popular songs. He has
contributed articles to "Clavier", "Piano Quarterly", and "Keyboard Companion". His
reverence for Americal composers associated with the "Golden Age of Popular Song" has
led to numerous performances of this repertoire with The American Music Trio and the
Haydon-Lyke Piano Duo.
